X-Spat Controller 8 is the control software of X-spat boX² when you use a single unit. Available for Mac OS X, Linux Debian 32 bit, Windows XP and Vista 32 bit, it is a freeware and you can download it on aegweb.it, even if the quantity of new features and the high ergonomic of the new guest user interface clearly put the software at the same level of other applications sold for several hundreds of Euro in the professional audio market .
The communication with the hardware can be done via MIDI or USB. When one expansion card PicoDM by ZP Engineering is correctly installed into X-spat boX², the software offers also an additional MIDI port (bi-directional) via FireWire. Another MIDI port is reserved to MIDI Time Code and the synchronization of X-spat Controller8 with external MIDI software.

X-spat Controller, starting from the 1.0 version made on the 2004, has always permitted the creation of virtual paths. Those phats have to be applied on audio sources sending data to the hardware DSP, using a graphic interface made by spheres included in a window more or less big. Each sphere is "connected" to an X-spat boX's input channel. The window represents the ambient in which the 3D spatialization will be reproduced. The X-spat boX² Standard version offers 8 AES/EBU digital channels in input and output and it is completly configurable and controllable in real time using SysEx e MIDI Control Change messages. This fact is particulary important for various reasons, first of all the most probable destination of a workstation with a so little number of in/out channels: the audio post-production for video. The great diffusion of the surround systems proposed by Dolby® UK has obliged the majors to adopt the 5.1 and 7.1 formats to distribute their contents on DVD. X-spat boX2 Standard, by its control softwareX-Spat Controller8, permits the realization of 3D-Enhanced Surround Technology soundscapes starting from quadriphonic up to 7.1 and 8.0. (the hardware system can be expanded anytime up to 64 digital outputs separated and freely configurable, but, in such case, the software to be used is X-Spat Controller II).
In the second place, the public MIDI Configuration Table makes the hardware freely configurable and complementary to any working space, from Pro Tools to Cubase, from Live to Max, from Reaper to Ardour and so on... The "static" configuration of X-spat boX², made by the patchbay settings and the number and the geometric positions of the speakers, can be quickly made in the pre-production stage using X-Spat Controller 8 then permanently stored in the internal memory of X-spat boX². At this point the automation of all the real time control parameters can be designed, edited and recorded directly in your preferred audio/MIDI software and saved in your working session togeher with the other audio and MIDI data.
